How to Change Your Major
conditions and instructions on changing into a Liberal Arts major
All students are required to have at least a GPR of 2.0 overall
(greater than 2.0 in some majors), 2.0 in the proposed major, and fewer
than 95 credit hours to be eligible to change curriculum into a College
of Liberal Arts major.
The following restrictions apply:
- There are several departments in the College of Liberal Arts under
enrollment management: Communication (COMM), International Studies
(INTS), Political Science (POLS), and Psychology (PSYC).
- Music majors (in the Performance Studies Department) must audition
before admission into the major (see department for details).
- There are no more changes of major into Journalism
(JOUR).
- Students wishing to change curriculum into majors under enrollment
management or with prerequisites for admission must satisfy these extra
requirements and/or prerequisites before they will be considered for
admission by the College of Liberal Arts. The advisor for each
major can provide details on these extra grade point requirements
and/or prerequisites.
- If you are in your first semester at Texas A&M
University, you may not change curriculum until five days after final
grades for the semester are recorded.
Please refer to Student Rules for deadlines to change curriculum.
To change a major into Liberal Arts:
- It is advisable that a research be made regarding the requirements for your new major. A "what if" degree audit in the proposed major can be obtained from Degree Audit for a nominal fee. You may be asked to specify either Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in the new major. Degree requirements can also be found in a current Texas A&M University Undergraduate Catalog, or you may visit an advisor in the department of the proposed major for a degree plan handout.
- Meet with an academic advisor in the department of the proposed
major. The advisor will review your academic history to determine
your eligibility. If you are accepted into the College of Liberal
Arts you will sign a “Change of Curriculum” form and an “Admission
Contract.” If you are currently a Liberal Arts or General Studies
Major, you will remain in the same catalog as before the change.
Students not currently in Liberal Arts or General Studies will be
placed in the most current catalog, if the change of major is
approved.
Your new major advisor can assist you in making appropriate
substitutions to your new degree plan, declare a minor, process
Q-drops, plan future schedules and graduation date, etc.
