Honors

What is the Honors Program in the College of Liberal Arts?

Honors in the College of Liberal Arts provides a unique educational experience. Each year, participants choose honors courses designed to foster an interdisciplinary outlook characteristic of the Liberal Arts. Participants work closely with some of the most distinguished faculty at Texas A&M University and experience what it means to be a part of a community of honors students.

Courses provide a broad exploration of the liberal arts in both the humanities and social sciences. Students may embark on an in depth research track with a faculty member of their choosing resulting in a senior Honors Thesis, or simply elect to take a broad variety of liberal arts honors courses to expand their horizons.

Honors Checklist (for download)

Once you are accepted into honors, you have two options.

Option One: Plenary Honors
Complete 30 hours of Liberal Arts Honors coursework, with at least 15 of those hours at the 300/400 level. This option allows students to concurrently complete requirements for “University Honors” through the University-wide Honors Program and gives students the maximum flexibility in course selection.

Option Two: Thesis Honors
Complete 15 hours of Liberal Art Honors coursework, with at least nine hours at the 300/400 level. After coursework is completed, a two-semester research project under the direction of a faculty mentor leads to the completion of an Honors Thesis. This option allows students interested in graduate or professional school or in a deeper understanding of their major subject to undertake a meaningful research experience. Students may also qualify for the University-wide Honors Research Fellows Program.
