Study abroad focuses on Japan's distinctive music and theatre culture
The 2009 TAMU in Tokyo summer study abroad, led by Martin Regan, assistant professor in music, and Kazue Kurokawa, lecturer in Japanese, promised to not only fill degree requirements, but to provide one-of-a-kind insight into the music and culture of Japan.
The Yoyogi National Olympics Memorial Youth Center housed the 13 participants during their five weeks in Japan and provided classroom space for classes in Music/Theatre 289 and Japanese 110. Frequent guest lecturers demonstrated various aspects of music and theatre such as the Kabuki and Noh traditional forms of theatre, and the shamisen and koto, instruments that are essential to Japanese music. Students also had the opportunity to partake in a Festival Taiko drumming workshop and a dinner/cultural exchange with Japanese University students. Sightseeing excursions included trips to the Edo Tokyo Museum, and the Hase Temple and Daibutsu or Big Buddha in Kamakura.
