Liberal Arts faculty receive Fulbright fellowships

College of Liberal Arts professors Paul Almeida, assistant professor of sociology; Jonathan Coopersmith, associate professor of history; Dennis Jansen, professor of economics; and Brian Linn, professor of history, have received Faculty Fulbright Fellowships for 2008-2009.

Almeida - Costa Rica
Almeida received the fellowship for his project, "Globalization, Democratization, and Civil Society in Central America." He will spend the 2008-2009 academic year as a visiting professor at the University of Costa Rica, where he will conduct field and archival research on the growth of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in Central America. He will also teach courses in sociological theory and collective behavior.

Almeida received his Ph.D. from the University of California-Riverside in 2001. His areas of interest include social movements, political sociology, Latin America, and historical comparative sociology.

Coopersmith - Tokyo
Coopersmith will spend the 2008-2009 academic year at the Tokyo Institute of Technology as a lecturer-researcher. He will teach courses in the history of technology and work on his comparative study of the decline of faxing and rise of e-mail in Japan and the United States.

Coopersmith received his Ph.D. from Oxford University and came to Texas A&M University in 1988. He specializes in history of technology and history of Russia and the Soviet Union.

Jansen - Ireland
Jansen will lecture/research at the National University of Ireland, Galway during fall 2008, where he will teach a class on international finance. Jansen's research will study the impact of large remittances flows on the remittance-receiving country, including the impact on consumption, work hours, economic output, and economic welfare. Jansen's work will build a theoretical model of remittances flows and will look specifically to the economic history of Ireland for empirical support.

Jansen received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1983 and came to Texas A&M that same year. His areas of specialization include monetary and financial economics.

Linn - Singapore
Linn will teach a class on U.S. military history and the Pacific and research U.S.-Pacific security issues at the National University of Singapore during spring 2009. He will conduct research on US-Asia-Pacific defense issues and present his research at academic and military seminars.

Linn received his Ph.D. from Ohio State University and has been at Texas A&M since 1989. His areas of specialization include military history and U.S. and Pacific history.

Fulbright grants are made to U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries for a variety of educational activities, primarily university lecturing, advanced research, graduate study and teaching in elementary and secondary schools. The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
