Africana Studies participates in several events

The Africana Studies program at Texas A&M will participate in several events this week

The events start on Wednesday, Oct. 3 with a lecture by Director of Africana Studies Kimberly Brown in Rudder 401 at 5:30 p.m. Her lecture entitled Popcorn Chat on “Hip Hop” is part of the Popular Culture Series and is sponsored by the Department of Multicultural Services.

Africana Studies will also host a film screening entitled Oscar Micheaux – An African American Film Pioneer on Wednesday Oct. 3 at 6:00 p.m. The screening will include “Within Our Gates” and “The Symbol of the Unconquered,” two of Micheaux’s silent films from the 1920s . The screening will be held in Evans Annex 417C and is in preparation of Pearl Bowser’s visit.

On Thursday, Pearl Bowser from the Society for Cinema & Media Studies will present a lecture about Micheaux at 7:00 p.m. in 410 EDMS. Her lecture, “Oscar Micheaux and His Circle and the Birth of An African Movie Culture,” is part of the Africana Film Series. The event is co-sponsored by Africana Studies, The Carter G. Woodson Black Awareness Committee, RESI, and Film Studies.

Africana Studies is an interdisciplinary minor offered in the College of Liberal Arts. The program is designed to give students critical and integrated perspectives on the historical, social, and cultural experiences and contributions of people of African descent.
