E-mail Policy for libarts.tamu.edu

The following information is supplied for the benefit of users who are sending or receiving emails from the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University.

We are running a version of Microsoft Exchange at libarts.tamu.edu that has various anti-spam and anti-virus features enabled, thus enabling us to reduce the amount of Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE) and viruses sent to our sites.

  • Relaying. - Relaying is the process of submitting an e-mail message to the SMTP server of a domain so that the e-mail message is transferred to the SMTP server of another domain for delivery without authenticating to the first domain. We do not allow any form of relaying.
  • Mail from selected sites. - Any site, domain or user that repeatedly sends UCE to any of our sites will be blocked. There will be no warnings. If you are a sender of UCE PLEASE take this as a request to remove any addresses that end in "tamu.edu" from your lists.
  • File attachments. - Emails with file attachments having any of the following extensions will be rejected:- 
    	.AD? .APP .ASP .ASX .BAS .BAT .CHM .CMD .COM .CPL .CRT .CSH .EXE
    	.FXP .HLP .HTA .INF .INS .ISP .JS? .KSH .LNK .MDA .MDB .MDE .MDT
    	.MDW .MDZ .MSC .MSI .MSP .MST .OPS .PCD .PIF .PRF .REG .SCF .SCR
    	.SCT .SH? .VB? .VSD .VSS .VST .VSW .WS? .ZIP
    Documents, spreadsheets and images are allowable content. If you want to send an attachment that would normally be rejected, please contact the intended recipient for instructions.
  • Unauthorized or inappropriate content, - In order to reduce SPAM, mail whose content contains obvious SPAM including certain phrases about money, sex or drugs will be rejected.

    This filtering is aimed at reducing SPAM rather than a crusade about sexual language, drugs ...

  • All email will be filtered. - We use Exchange and Symantec to filter all of our email.
  • Greylisting filtering. - Greylisting is a simple method of defending electronic mail users against e-mail spam. For more information see link: greylisting
  • Maximum message size. - The maximum allowable size of a single email message is 10 megabytes.
