8/28/09 Dale Rice Appointed Director of Journalism Studies Program

Dale Rice Appointed Director of Journalism Studies Program

Dale Rice, lecturer in the College of Liberal Arts, has been appointed director of the Journalism Studies (JOUR) program, effective Sept. 1, 2009. Rice will oversee the JOUR undergraduate minor and curriculum. He will also chair the Journalism Studies advisory committee and serve on the college’s Interdisciplinary Council.

The Journalism Studies Program is an interdisciplinary minor that gives students the opportunity to interact with media professionals through internships and the college’s Journalists-in-Residence program. The program is limited to 25 new students a year to ensure a high level of interaction among students, instructors, and media professionals.

Dale Rice joined the Journalism Studies Program in 2008 as a lecturer after his most recent position of restaurant critic at the Austin American-Statesman. Rice earned a B.A. in International Relations and Journalism from Syracuse University. A veteran journalist of 35 years, Rice has covered a wide array of beats. Rice integrates his experiences as a general assignments reporter, city hall reporter, education writer, capital bureau chief, business editor, deputy features editor and restaurant critic into his teaching. Rice also mentors aspiring journalists that are a part of the College of Liberal Arts’ Student Reporter Project in producing their online publication In-Depth.
