Murphy selected as a 2009-2010 Montague – CTE Scholar
Colleen Murphy, assistant professor of philosophy, has been selected as the 2009-2010 Montague-Center for Teaching Excellence Scholars in the College of Liberal Arts.
Murphy plans to develop an interdisciplinary course in the ethics of conflict resolution with the grant she was awarded from the CTE Scholars program.
The Montague-CTE Scholar program, named for founding donor Kenneth Montague '37, honors early-career excellence in undergraduate teaching at Texas A&M. The intent of the program is to recognize one tenure-track assistant professor in each college who has already demonstrated a commitment to, and potential for, excellence in undergraduate teaching.
This award includes a $6,500 grant for each recipient to encourage further development of undergraduate teaching excellence.
“This course is designed to deepen students’ understanding of how to respond to disagreement and conflict in both a constructive and morally justified manner. Conflict and seemingly intractable disagreement are found increasingly at the local, national, and global levels. By focusing on the ethics of conflict resolution my course addresses, and helps students think critically about, a central contemporary challenge,” she said.
Murphy, along with her fellow Montague-CTE Scholars, will be honored at a luncheon on Nov. 3, 2009.
