2/21/08 - EURO hosts one-day symposium on “Intellectuals, Nationalisms and European Identity”

The Department of European and Classical Languages and Cultures will host a one-day symposium titled “Intellectuals, Nationalisms and European Identity” on Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Sterling C. Evans Library in the Whitley Suite.

“The conference will examine how important writers and intellectuals have defined and reacted to a variety of forms of European nationalism from the 19th century to the present,” said Richard J. Golsan, professor of French and department head.  “The speakers will also address how the idea of ‘Europe’ has influenced these nationalisms.”

Presenters include: 

  • Russell Berman, distinguished professor of German and comparative literature at Stanford University
  • David Carroll, professor of French at the University of California-Irvine
  • Daniel Conway, professor of philosophy and department head at Texas A&M University
  • Christopher Flood, professor of European studies and department head of political science at the University of Surrey
  • Donald Reid, professor of history and director of graduate studies at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
  • Jeffrey Schnapp, Rosine Peroti professor of Italian and director of the humanities laboratory at Stanford University


The event is co-sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts, Department of History, Department of English, Department of Philosophy, the Italian Consulate (Houston), the European Union Center of Excellence and the South Central Review.
