Sonic Crossroads announces Ivan Božičević as the fall 2009 artist-in-residence
Sonic Crossroads is pleased to host Croatian composer and performer Ivan Božičević in residence from Oct. 15-Nov. 18, 2009.
Božičević will perform in concert on Nov. 6, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at First Methodist Church in Bryan along with members of the Performance Studies faculty and the TAMU orchestra under the direction of Paul Sikes. Admission is free. Faculty and students featured on the concert include Anna Carney (clarinet), Michael Fleming (bass), Alex Hlavinka (piano), Bethany Lawrence (oboe). Božičević also plans to collaborate on creating new works while he is in residence with faculty members: Mariana Gariazzo (flute), Jayson Beaster-Jones (saxophone), Jeff Morris (computer music), and Kathryn Woodard (piano).
Additionally, the TAMU Women’s Chorus under the direction of Jess Wade will perform a work by Božičević in San Antonio on Oct. 24th.
Ivan Božičević is a prolific composer and active performer (piano and organ). In addition to modern classical, he is interested in a variety of genres (early baroque, electronic, jazz, world music) and the possibility of “cross-fertilizations” between those genres, always aiming for the stylistic fusion on a deeper level.
The Sonic Crossroads residency is sponsored by a grant from CECArtsLink, www.cecartslink.org. Additionally, the other collaborating partners include:
- American Guild of Organists – Brazos Valley Chapter
- Texas A&M Electronic Music Studio (Department of Performance Studies)
- Texas A&M Women’s Choruses
- Texas A&M Orchestra
- University of Houston Moores School of Music: Composer’s Forum and Tuesday Recital Series
Sonic Crossroads is a music initiative founded by Kathryn Woodard and created to explore cross-cultural exchange in music and the processes of musical globalization. The initiative offers concerts with guest artists from around the globe, workshops in performance and composition, symposia on historical and contemporary musical exchange, and a commissioning and recording program to promote new works by emerging composers, arrangers and performers. Educational outreach is central to the mission of Sonic Crossroads with the aim of building audiences for both new music and traditional music and intersections between the two.
