6/4/07 - Bradford earns honor for service to maritime history organization
The North American Society for Oceanic History has awarded James C. Bradford, associate professor of history at Texas A&M University, with the K. Jack Bauer award. The award recognizes Bradford’s distinguished service to the organization and his lifetime contributions to the field of maritime history.
Bradford, a faculty member in history who earned his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, came to Texas A&M in 1981. Prior to Texas A&M Bradford taught at the United States Naval Academy. While on Texas A&M faculty he taught at the Air War College and in Malaysia.
Bradford specializes in naval, maritime and early American history. He is the editor of The Papers of John Paul Jones, several volumes of essays, and The Library of Naval Book Biography book series. A founding member of the Society for Historians of the Early American Republic, he was executive director of the organization from 1995-2004.
One of the most active members of NASOH, Bradford served as vice-president from 1993 to 1997 and program chair for annual conferences in 2000 and 2001. He also acted as a member of the John Lyman Book Prize Committee for 17 years since 1990 and its chairman for the past 12 years. He currently serves as a member of the editorial board of the peer-reviewed academic journal, The Northern Mariner and co-edits the book series New Perspectives on Maritime History and Nautical Archeology.
The North American Society for Oceanic History is devoted to the study of naval and maritime history. It was founded in 1973 and also housed the U.S. Commission on maritime history.
