04/07/08 - Composer Hyo-shin Na visits Texas A&M University with Seoul-Based Kayageum (Korean Zither) Ensemble





(Texas A&M University, College Station, TX)- Composer, Hyo-shin Na will be visiting at the Texas A&M University main campus on Tuesday, April 15, 2008 and Wednesday, April 16, 2008. Accompanying her will be the Seoul-based kayageum (Korean zither) ensemble Sagye, and pianist Thomas Schultz. This visit includes a concert and residency programs.

Hyo-shin Na’s music has been described as “elegant, beautiful, and effective.” Her work is written for western instruments, traditional Korean instruments, and combinations of western and Asian instruments and ways of playing. She studied piano and composition in her native Korea before relocating to the U.S. in 1983 for graduate work at the Manhattan School of Music. She later received her doctorate from the University of Colorado. In Korea, she has twice been awarded the Korean National Composers Prize, and in the west she has been commissioned by the Fromm and Koussevitzky Foundations, among many others. Her work has been performed by well-known ensembles around the world, including the Kronos Quartet and the Korean Traditional Orchestra of the National Theatre. She is also an author and translator, and is currently based in San Francisco.

The concert, Wednesday, April 16 at 7:30 pm, features Hyo-shin Na’s compositions performed by Sagye, and pianist Thomas Schultz. Sagye, literally meaning “Four Worlds,” was founded in 1998 and plays both old and new music in Korea and abroad. The ensemble has four members: Jung Min Song, Soo Hyun Cho, Na Jung Jin, and Sun Young Hwang, all of whom were educated at Seoul National University.

Thomas Schultz, pianist, has established an international reputation both as an interpreter of music from the classical tradition and as one of the leading exponents of the music of our time. He has worked closely with renowned composers including John Cage, Morton Feldman, Jonathan Harvey and Elliott Carter. He has been a member of the piano faculty at Stanford University since 1994.

The concert will be in Rudder Theatre on April 16 at 7:30 pm. Before the concert the musicians will conduct residency workshops with students in the Texas A&M University Department of Performance Studies. Residency times are: Tuesday, April 15, 9:35 am - 10:50 am, 12:45 pm - 2:00pm, and 2:20 pm - 3:35pm; and Wednesday, April 16, 11:30am - 12:20pm, 12:40pm - 1:30pm, and 3:00pm - 3:50pm. All residencies will be located in Rudder Theatre.

The residencies are free and open to the public. Admission to the concert will be $5 for students, and $10 for general admission. Tickets are available at the MSC Box Office. For more information, contact the MSC Box Office at 979-845-1234.
