03/27/08 - Retired Navy Capt. to speak on personal experience charting the Siberian continental shelf

Alfred McLaren will speak on Thursday, April 3.
Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Alfred McLaren will present his lecture and be available for a book signing on Thursday, April 3 at 6 p.m. His lecture is titled “Unknown Waters: A First-Hand Account of the Historic Under-Ice Survey of the Siberian Continental Shelf” and will take place in Room 204E in Evans Library.

After retiring from the Navy in 1981, McLaren earned a Ph.D. in polar studies from the University of Colorado and focused his research on the Arctic's role in climate change.

McLaren is the author of “Unknown Waters,” which recounts the 1970 voyage of a submarine, the Queenfish, on a pioneering dive beneath the ice of the Siberian shelf.

The event is sponsored by the Center for Maritime Archaeology & Conservation Lecture Series, the Nautical Archeology Program and the Department of Anthropology.
