Comparative Cultural Studies
University graduates need to be prepared to live and succeed in a
highly sophisticated environment. Internationally, this implies an
increasingly integrated global society in which economic, social, and
political factors are ever more interconnected. Nationally, the
pluralism of American society creates a diversity that challenges
traditional knowledge and insight. Survival, and more importantly
success, of university graduates is increasingly linked to an
understanding of cultures beyond their own personal experience.
An
interdisciplinary minor in Comparative Cultural Studies can contribute
to preparing students for the demands and requirements of a diverse and
interconnected environment. Students choose from two general focus
areas: U.S. Cultures and International Cultures. Requirements for the
minor total 18 hours and include
- a foundation course with a U.S. or international focus
- a capstone course
- four courses from program areas
In
these program areas students select 12 credit hours, no more than 9
hours from any one topical or geographical area. Representative areas
include
- African American
- African
- Asian
- Central American
- South American
- Latino culture
- European Culture
Program areas within the U.S. Cultures minor center on diverse areas such as African American Studies and Latino Studies. Students select a capstone course in consultation with the program coordinator. The course should integrate information presented in other courses in the minor and provide coherence to the educational experience in the Minor in Comparative Cultural Studies. Participants in the minor are required to take this capstone course some time after completing at least 9 hours of course work toward the minor.
