What is the LBAR Honors Plan?

The LBAR Honors Plan in the College of Liberal Arts provides a unique educational experience. Each year, participants are involved in a set of honors courses designed to foster an interdisciplinary outlook characteristic of the Liberal Arts. Participants work closely with some of the most distinguished faculty at Texas A&M University and take part in a community of honors students.

How Does the LBAR Plan Work?

Students accepted into the LBAR Plan take one or two courses together each year at Texas A&M University. The courses are designed to help connect all the knowledge that students are learning in their other courses. As the the LBAR Plan progresses, students develop their own interests and each eventually writes an honors thesis under the direct supervision of the professor with whom she or he has chosen to work. All students in the LBAR Plan must complete 18 additional hours of honors course work.

First Year

First-Year Honors Seminar (LBAR 181): This focused, one-hour seminar (ten students per faculty member) introduces students to honors work.

Sophomore Year

Foundations of the Liberal Arts (LBAR 203 & 204): This team-taught, interdisciplinary sophomore sequence explores the humanities and social sciences. Participants will read classic texts in the various disciplines and address key issues confronting us today. LBAR 203 counts toward the core curriculum humanities requirement, and LBAR 204 counts towards the core curriculum social sciences requirement.

Junior Year

The Junior Seminar (LBAR 381): This special topics course (topic varies each year) takes an interdisciplinary approach to a subject. Previous Junior Seminars have covered Global Economic Issues, Gender in Renaissance Culture, and the American West.

Senior Year

Senior Honors Thesis: To cap it all off, each student writes an honors thesis, usually through the University Fellows Program. Some interesting methods of finding and funding research opportunities (yes, even for undergraduates) can be found at the Office of the Vice President for Research.
