The Economics Department at Texas A&M University offers BA, BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Economics. The Department of English at Texas A&M University has played an important role on campus since the University's founding in 1876, when "Languages and Literature" was designated as one of the original four courses of study. The English Department proper was founded in 1877, with Professor and General L.M. Lewis as its head. English was the first department in the College of Liberal Arts to offer graduate degrees, establishing its MA program in 1962 and the PhD in 1967. Now in its second century, the Department of English maintains a tradition of excellence in research and teaching at all levels.

In an age of ever increasing globalization and intercultural exchange, the Department of European and Classical Languages and Cultures helps prepare Texas A&M University students for careers in education, international affairs, international business, foreign service, and a variety of other professions. We offer majors in French, German, and Russian and co-sponsor a Masters Degree in Comparative Literatures and Cultures. In the near future, we will offer a major in Classics and a PhD in European Studies. The Department also offers beginning and intermediate courses in Italian and Japanese and plans to offer courses in Arabic in the next two years.

The Department of Hispanic Studies at Texas A&M University is a diverse department of teacher scholars one of whose goals it is to explore with our students the rich and varied languages, literatures, and cultures of the Hispanic World. The Department offers a Bachelors and Masters in Spanish, and a Doctoral degree in Hispanic Studies. With faculty deeply rooted in the liberal arts and through a curriculum ranging from offers beginning to advanced classes in Spanish and Portuguese, our students learn to think critically and to understand complexity, similarity, and divergence in the many Hispanic cultures. The Department of History at Texas A&M University offers the BA, MA, and PhD in history. Established in 1999, the Department of Performance Studies is the first department at Texas A&M solely devoted to the arts. The Department offers both a B.A. and minor in Music and Theatre Arts. The B.A. in Music offers an interdisciplinary approach to the study of music with courses in composition, ethnomusicology, music history, music theory, music technology, and performance through various means. The B.A. in Theatre Arts provides training in the classroom and in an integrated theatre production program. The curriculum prepares student for professional theatre training programs and/or graduate work in the liberal and fine arts, teaching theatre in the secondary school, and a variety of careers in the professional arena or the world of business and industry.

The Department of Political Science is one of the largest departments in the College, with approximately 1,000 undergraduate majors, 60 graduate students, and a faculty of more than 50 professors. The department began granting Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees in 1969, the Bachelor of Science degree in 1981, and doctoral degrees in 1988. By 2005 the PhD program was ranked 22nd overall, 8th among public institutions, and 17th in the field of American Politics by U.S. News and World Report. The faculty, which publishes regularly in the discipline’s top journals, is routinely recognized in surveys of research productivity. Currently, the department is editorial home to the American Journal of Political Science and Presidential Studies Quarterly. Since 1997 the department has been located in the Allen Building, adjacent to the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum.

Welcome to the Department of Psychology. We in the department have two primary goals: to graduate outstanding doctoral-level research scientists and practitioners, and to provide an undergraduate education in scientific psychology that encourages critical thinking, a broad intellectual perspective, and life-long learning. The Psychology faculty is engaged in innovative research programs in diverse areas of specialization. Recognized both nationally and internationally, faculty members have received numerous awards for research and teaching. Collectively, the faculty hold several million dollars in research grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Health, as well as other federal and/or state agencies. The Department enrolls approximately 100 graduate students and offers numerous opportunities for student collaboration with faculty. The student-faculty ratio is roughly 3:1, which allows individualized attention to develop research and/or professional skills. The goals of the Ph.D. program in Psychology are: 1) to prepare students for careers as researchers and teachers at colleges and universities, and 2) to prepare students for careers as scientist-practitioners in clinical psychology and industrial/organizational psychology.

The Department of Sociology is among the largest sociology programs in the country. Its nearly 30 graduate faculty have expertise in a wide range of areas and publish their research and scholarship with top academic presses and in leading scientific journals. Department faculty have received numerous awards and honors and have served as presidents of national and regional professional associations and as editors and associate editors of leading journals in the discipline. The program of more than 60 full-time students has the advantages that come with large size. At the same time, with nearly 30 graduate faculty, the student-faculty ratio of about 2:1 is highly favorable. Thus, students have excellent opporutnities to assist faculty on research projects and develop their own research programs under close faculty supervision.
